In the high Middle age it was invaded by Ostrogoths, Byzantines, Longobards and Franks and population fell to as few as 1,000 people. Under Charlemagne’s rule Florence started to grow and prosper. After tenth century it became a Commune and one of the richest and most powerful city in Europe with its gold currency, the florin.

Paris

Paris is situated in the north-east of France,of which is the capital. It has a very long history since its ile-de-France was already inhabitated 40.000 years ago. Of all historic events that took place in this city, the most important is the Taken of Bastille,a big prison,in July 14th, 1789. So France is not a monarchy anymore. Liberty,Equality,Fraternity became the national motto.

When you get to Paris,it's hard to decide which place to visit first:there is Notre-Dame,the ancient Saint-Etienne cathedral built around 540 a.C, Rue Saint-Germain the oldest street in Paris, Louvre and D'Orsay museums, the Arc de Triomphe beginning of the Champs-Elysées,the Sacre Coer, the Moulin Rouge, the Panthéon, and above all,the Tour Eiffel built in occasion of the 1889 world exposition to celebrate the century of the French Revolution.

In France they celebrate the traditional Christian holidays such as Christmas and Easter. On Christmas there is a huge Christmas market on the Champs-Elysées and a cosy little one on Boulevard Saint-Germain. In this period you can eat the Buche de Noel, a cake made to look like a log. And another typical cake is the Galette des Rois, inside which there used to be a bean, but now is a small figurine. Whoever gets the figurine is crowned king or queen.

There are a lot of sports in France. The most popular sports are soccer and cycling.
